Why Walk?

Although walking is something that the majority of us do on a daily basis we quite often forget that a brisk walk is the perfect activity to help improve our health and fitness. All of our Put Your Best Foot Forward walks are health walks, defined as "a purposeful, brisk walk undertaken on a regular basis".

Some people become anxious about the word 'brisk' and worry that they do not have the fitness to manage, however this needn't be the case! The required intensity will vary for each individual depending on their fitness levels. What is brisk for one person may not be for another. The walks cater for all abilities.

Walking has been shown to benefit health by:

  • reducing the risk of coronary heart disease and strokes
  • helping to reduce body fat
  • lowering blood pressure and high cholesterol levels
  • increasing bone density, which helps to prevent osteoporosis.

Not only are there health benefits from participating in health walks but:

  • our health walks are free
  • they are very sociable, giving you the chance to meet new people
  • walking can be great fun!
